The peristyle at the heart of the Domus Flavia is drawn with an octagonal fountain, dining rooms and an octagonal hall.
An octagonal maze-like fountain stands in the garden court, with the triclinia, an octagonal hall and an oecus around it. The plan focuses on the open centre of the palace and the rooms facing onto it.
